Teaching Photography

Some of the workshop gang in Oregon this past June.

Just wrote a story about teaching photography, and what an education that’s been for me too.

Learning DSLR video

The

Last weekend I was in Lake Tahoe to teach another Popular Photography Mentor Series workshop. This one had a bit of a twist to it – we were going to teach video too. The Nikon D90 was the first DSLR to offer video, and now it’s a given that any new DSLR will have that capability. And that can be quite impressive. TV shows, commercials, music videos and movies are all being shot on DSLRs today. And I’ve been shooting video with them since the start too. But this was the first workshop I’ve taught where that was part of the schedule.

Facebook

My Facebook page.

I've never been a Facebook user. My wife's been on it for several years, and it's been a great way for her to stay in touch with all of our friends. But I haven't wanted the make the commitment. These days I'm singing a different tune, though, because I found a way to use Facebook to fill a void.

When Things Go Wrong

Uh-oh, that doesn't look good.

Most of what I do these days is teach photography. Which means I often find myself in front of a bunch of people, doing a demo where I hope everything goes right. Occasionally, though, things go wrong, and that’s when life gets interesting.

Great Photo Conference

View from Mt. Sugarloaf, near the campus.

Earlier this month I attended the New England Camera Clubs Council annual conference, in Amherst, MA. I'd heard good things about it for years, and was pleased to find it lived up to its reputation. If you have a chance, you should really try to attend.

Stylized Printing

Created with Nik Silver Efex Pro.

I was down in San Antonio for the Imaging USA Conference earlier this week. With some free time Tuesday morning, I took a walk through the print winners, and was struck by how few "straight" prints there were. Considering the state of the photography business these days, though, I shouldn't have been surprised.

Painting with the Master

Barn lit from far left, trees lit from behind barn.

Back in 2001 I had my first opportunity to teach a workshop with Dave Black, and watched him give a light painting demonstration. Since then I've had the pleasure of watching him grow the size, complexity and beauty of his light painting. Last week we both were in the Tetons teaching a Mentor Series workshop (http://www.mentorseries.com), and this time I had the chance to not only watch him work, but also do a little of my own large-scale light painting. What a blast!

Hard(ly) at Work

I'm in Greece leading a photo trek for American Photo. We've had a great time so far, starting in Athens and then going on to the island of Mykonos. After three days here, today we take the ferry to Santorini. We've made a lot of good photos, but perhaps as important, we've had fun and time to relax as well.
